British Values

British Values

At our school, we value the diverse backgrounds of all pupils, staff and families and undertake a variety of events and lessons to celebrate these throughout the year. We teach our children to be tolerant and respectful towards others, embracing the differences in our community and the wider world. Within this, we recognise the importance of promoting fundamental ‘British Values’ as part of our school’s programme of spiritual, moral, cultural and social development.


These include the values of:


  • Democracy

  • The Rule of Law

  • Individual Liberty

  • Mutual Respect

  • Tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.


    Promoting these British Values is now a central part of teaching and learning. By doing this, we aim to help children become well-rounded members of the society. These British Values are promoted throughout the curriculum, across the whole school. They are also seen in the school ethos and policies, assemblies, special events and cultural celebrations.


    Each term, we are going to learn about a different British Value. This term’s focus is on Democracy. In September, we had a Whole School Assembly on Democracy. We talked about different ways that we promote Democracy in our school. For example:


  • The whole school voted for our School Council representatives.

  • Each class voted for their School Council Representatives – there are two children from each class.

  • The School Council are involved in decision making in our school – they decide which charities we support, they help fundraise and they often decide what we spend our money on to improve the school.

  • In June 2017, children contributed to our new Behaviour Policy.

  • The children have decided their class rules.

  • Some National Curriculum topics include Democracy i.e. Ancient Greeks, World War II.

  • Year 6 hold Mock Elections.

  • Children often vote for their favourite stories or activities.


    When you come into school next, you will see our display board on British Values in the Entrance Area. Look out for future events this year on British Values.  For example, our Respect Week which will be in February 2018.

Activities / Lessons within our school












Tolerance of different cultures and religions



  • Through our RE curriculum we teach other faiths. We cover two other faiths per year – one of which is always Judaism. This year the other faith was Islam.
  • The children learn about Remembrance Day and study Black History Month.
  • Signs around the school are in different languages.
  • We sing some Christmas carols in other languages e.g. Polish.
  • Whole school displays often reflect other cultures.
  • In Reception Class, Fred Bear goes home with each child and we discuss what happens at each home. The children often learn about different cultures from this.
  • We have world celebrations in EYFS e.g. Chinese New Year.
  • Children answer the register in different languages (often in their mother tongue).
  • We study different cultures and Religions through our topic work e.g. Mexico in Year 6, Darwinism vs Creationism.
  • We have hosted an International Evening where we had food and displays from around the world.
  • School letters are translated.
  • Translators are used for Parents Consultations and when required.
  • School dinner choices are available to suit different cultures i.e. no meat Friday or no pork.
  • Respect Week – Planned for February 2018.














  • We have School Council. Two children from each class are elected by their classmates to represent them. We run School Council Hustings each September and the whole school vote for their Committee Members.
  • Children contribute to the Behaviour Policy i.e. they review behaviour systems that we have in place and ensure that they work well.
  • At the beginning of the school year, the children decided their class rules and class charter is drawn up.
  • Voting is sometimes used to agree a class answer.
  • Some National Curriculum topics are about Democracy i.e. The Ancient Greeks, World War II.
  • Children vote for their favourite story or preferred choice of activity.
  • Year 6 participate in Mock Elections i.e. General Election, Europe. They learn about each groups beliefs/manifesto and then they vote for their preference.
  • Pupil Voice is used to include pupils’ opinions.





Rule of Law

  • We have a clear Behaviour Policy that all children and staff follow.
  • We have Class rules.
  • We have a Home/School Agreement that pupils and parents sign and agree to follow.
  • We have a red and yellow card system for lunchtime behaviour that has clear sanctions.
  • Police Visits.
  • We learn about the 10 Commandments in RE.
  • We have an eSafety policy that children and staff follow.
  • We have an Anti-Bullying policy that children and staff follow.
  • Uniform Policy.




Individual Liberty



  • Red and yellow card system – Pupils reflect on the good and bad choices they made and they have the opportunity to resolve their conflicts.
  • Crucial Crew – Year 6 learn about making the right choices in life.
  • RE Curriculum – We learn about the 10 Commandments and Parables.
  • Children can choose whether to stand for School Council or not.
  • Special Needs children are given choices e.g. Task 1 or Task 2.
  • Children have the opportunity to participate in extra-curricular activities.
  • Children make healthy choices at lunchtime.
  • Pupils choose to take on responsibilities e.g. Trouble Busters, Prefects.
  • Children have freedom of speech through School Council and Pupil Voice.
  • Children are allowed to choose who to sit with at lunchtime.
