How parents can support their child with maths

Forest School

To celebrate the end of our Forest School year, we had a campfire and made delicious s'mores.  It was a delight to see children who had done this before, share the experience with their friends for whom it was new and exciting.  Some children sat back and watched, waiting to be convinced this was worth trying .... their sticky faces showed their decisions were well made.  I was very impressed that every child tried one - many for the first time ever!  A huge thank you to Mrs McSweeney for giving up every Thursday morning to help Year 1's Forest School sessions.

Hatfield House Farm

What a wonderful day was had at Hatfield House Farm!  The children walked there and back, fed the animals, were astounded at how hairy the pigs were, devoured their packed lunches, had a tractor ride and enjoyed playing in the Bloody Hollow Playground.  They were an absolute credit to the school, and to you.  Thank you to the parents who joined us today, helping with this trip.

Spaceship landing

Today we had a huge surprise .... a spaceship crashed onto our field!  Thankfully it just missed the trim trail. We had to search for clues and evidence amongst all the debris left behind.  We even saw some footprints and were very careful not to crack the large egg.  After lunch, we went to explore and gather evidence and the egg was GONE! We found a letter, left by the aliens, thanking us for looking after the egg whilst they fixed their spaceship to go home.  What an exciting day!  Now it is up to us to investigate the materials we found and try to build our own rocket.

Forest School

It has been a delight to watch the children in Year 1 engage with their Forest School sessions this term.  The philosophy of Forest Schools is to encourage and inspire individuals through positive outdoor experiences ... and our children were certainly inspired and excited to promise to be respectful Forest Rangers.  They were thrilled with their log circle from the fairies and have enjoyed learning new games involving listening & speaking skills, turn taking and teamwork.  Even over this short period, it has been fascinating to watch the children's confidence and imagination grow.  I can't wait to see what next term brings.

Shared Reading

Every Friday afternoon the children enjoy reading with their buddies from Year 4. We meet in each other's classrooms and read to each other. This half term we have also discussed our 'Talk Time' topics with our buddies.

During the Autumn Term we have been learning about and understanding the value of numbers. We can now recognise and represent them in lots of different ways. We are now more confident to use these numbers in our addition and subtraction problems.

At the start of our topic we worked in groups to write down all the information and facts we knew about dinosaurs.  We then shared this information with our classmates and thought about what we would like to find out more about over the term.
